Discrimination

Recently there was an issue in Indiana where they set a "Religious Freedom Law" into place. This law had a section in it that allowed anyone with a religious belief to discriminate against anyone they wished. Thankfully they fixed the law and it's not longer an issue. However, it did get me thinking about discrimination in general and I have come to the conclusion that if someone doesn't understand why discrimination is wrong then they are simply a shitty human being. Let me tell you why.

Let's first take a look in history and see what discrimination has gotten the human race so far. I'm not going to go back to the beginning of recorded history because I don't want to be here for years typing this up. So I'll start with the dark ages. Religious discrimination between christian nations caused an untold number of deaths due to the wars they incited. The middle east has been at war so many times I have lost track all due to the idea that one religion is better than another but that isn't discrimination is it? Oh, wait that is the definition discrimination isn't it. The main cause for World War I was nationalism. I've never thought of nationalism as discrimination before but after looking it up I see it's discrimination against every nation but the one you belong to. World War II was due to nationalism and the discrimination of Judaism. There is of course the well known cause of the US Civil war. While technically not about racial discrimination, though that was a major factor, it was discrimination against the US government. Even the revolutionary war was about Britain discriminating against the American colonies. I could go on but I'm sure by now you see the point. Basically every major conflict in written history has been do to one form of discrimination or another. Therefore, discrimination has lead to death, war, and general mistreatment of people for as far back as we can read about. Therefore, discrimination=bad there is no other way to see it if you value human life. Someone that doesn't value human life is simply a shitty human being.

Discrimination takes freedoms from one group and gives freedoms to another. No matter what the reason behind it, that is simply wrong. Our parents, teachers, and ever employers have tried to teach us to be fair. Discrimination makes things unfair. How can this not be understood?

The bullshit call from people on the Indiana Religious Freedom Law's discrimination clause was a valid point. However, the supporters of this law said that to not have this law is religious discrimination. I'm calling bullshit on what is hopefully only knee jerk reaction. Their claim is that if they cannot discriminate against certain groups (LGBT community mainly) then they are being discriminated against because their religion calls for it. My whole response to them is if you don't want to treat everyone equally then don't put yourself in a position to do so. It's really that simple. You don't want to make a wedding cake for a gay marriage. Then don't sell wedding cakes. You don't like the idea of gay marriage, then don't marry someone of the same sex. You think abortion is wrong, then don't get one. If you are going to provide good or services to the public then you must provide them to anyone that wants them. You do have the right to refuse service to anyone but not on the grounds of the community they belong to.

Assuming someone really wants to discriminate they are welcome to do it in their personal lives. The private organizations, friends they choose, and relationships they have are all fair game for their bigoted points of view. I would never tell someone they don't have the right to be a bigot if they wish. However, I will tell them they don't have a right to force their bigotry onto anyone else.

Religious freedom laws in general are fine. People have the right to believe what they want to believe. They also have a right to live the way their life as their religions say. Up to the point that it affects others. Here are a few examples. The KKK (a Christian organization BTW) would, if allowed, discriminate against anyone that is not a white christian. Should they be allowed to do this? The Mormons are taught "For behold, the Lord shall curse the land with much heat, and the barrenness thereof shall go forth forever; and there was a blackness came upon all the children of Canaan, that they were despised among all people." Moses 7:8  Therefore they would discriminate against anyone that is not white. Should they be allowed to do this? Many, but not all, Christian churches see homosexuality as a sin and would gladly discriminate against them. Should they be allowed to do this? Muslims are taught "Your Lord inspired the angels saying, "I am with you. Encourage the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers and you will strike their heads and limbs" Koran 8:21 Should they be allowed to do this?

If you have answered yes to any of the above questions you are a despicable human being. I might be just a guy named rug but that's what I think.
