Religion of Peace

I was watching one of the latest videos from +AronRa called the Unholy Trinity Down Under: "Biblical Absurdity". At about 16 minutes into the video he makes a comment along the lines of the following. Three religions of peace all worshipping god of love and forgiveness yet they have been at war since the beginning. That is not an exact quote but the point remains. This got me thinking how many times have we heard it said? Here are a few quotes just to get an idea what religious people say about peace and their religion.

"Islam teaches tolerance, not hatred; universal brotherhood, not enmity; peace, and not violence."
   -Pervez Musharraf

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God" -Jesus Christ via Matthew 5:9

"Judaism teaches peace, love, unity, dignity, and kindness." -Adam Buchwald

The simple fact that supposedly all three of these religions teach peace makes it rather hard to understand why the middle east is constantly either at war or on the verge of war. This is the holy ground for all three religions and yet they can't seem to live there in peace. Maybe it has something to do with quotes like these.

"And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- îaram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers." -Quran 2:191

"When you go out to war against other nations, and come face to face with horses and war-carriages and armies greater in number than yourselves, have no fear of them: for the Lord your God is with you …" -Deuteronomy 20:1

"I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." Jesus Christ via Matthew 10:35

No matter which of these holy books you read there is tons of violence. Tons of war, killing, rape, and even genocide. Is there really any wonder these people have been at war with one another for centuries? Come to think about it. They have their kids reading this stuff. What kind of message is that giving the children?

This is just one of the many reasons why religion disgust me. Not only do their holy books preach killing one another and then at the same time telling them not to kill. Then religious followers try to say it doesn't say that. When you point out the passages that say exactly that. They say your are interpreting it wrong. I'm sorry, I don't think there is any other way to interpret these passages.

Religions have been teaching hate for thousands of years. I think it's about time we put the guns, knives, and other weapons down. Put these so called holy books down, and forget what they say. Then maybe, just maybe we could have a world without mass blood shed. Now the question is, what do you think?
